Livestock care standards go into effect today

Ohio’s livestock care rules will become effective today when Department of Agriculture Director James Zehringer signs off on them at a special ceremony in Fort Recovery. The establishment of these comprehensive livestock care standards was required by Ohio’s constitution following the passage of State Issue 2 in 2009.

Livestock board returns “turn around” language to veal standard

Following extensive public comment and a fair amount of controversy, the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board has reinserted language in proposed veal standards to stipulate that after Dec. 31, 2017, calves which are housed individually must be able to turn around. Additionally, after Dec. 31, 2017, tethering of veal calves will only be allowed to restrain a calf for examination, transit, treatment or as an intervention for naval cross-sucking.

Gov. issues exotic animal ownership regulation

Columbus, OH — Jan. 6, 2011 — Gov. Ted Strickland today issued an executive order that completes the governor’s responsibilities brokered in the agreement between Ohio’s agricultural leaders and the Humane Society to enhance animal care standards while maintaining a vibrant livestock industry in Ohio.

The emergency executive order allows for the immediate adoption of a new Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife rule that bans the private ownership of dangerous wild animals.

Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board passes vote on euthanasia standards

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (Oct. 5, 2010) – The Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board today unanimously voted to create new euthanasia livestock care standards—the first such set of standards created in the state’s history. Proposed euthanasia rules will be filed with the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review (JCARR) to begin the rule making process.

OVMA responds to footage from Plain City dairy farm

The organization Mercy For Animals today released footage from an undercover investigation at Plain City-based Conklin Dairy Farms. The video, recorded over the past month, depicts numerous acts of animal cruelty by several farm employees, including owner Gary Conklin.

Animal confinement ballot initiative launched in Ohio

In an expected move, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and other groups announced today their intention to place on the ballot a proposal eliminating certain livestock housing systems. The ballot language would also call for a prohibition on the strangulation of cows and pigs as a method of euthanasia and the introduction of downer cows into the food supply system.
