We want you to connect with your peers and veterinary professionals — and we're here to help. As an OVMA member, you'll have the opportunity to meet with a variety of veterinary professionals who can mentor you as you work toward getting your degree, help you decide on a specialty, and offer you internships.
Educational Experience
Each year, the OVMA hosts the Midwest Veterinary Conference, a four-day regional event packed with opportunities. And, admission is FREE for OVMA student members! You'll be able to choose from 400+ hours of educational sessions in 20 different tracks, ranging from animal behavior to aquaculture. These sessions are led by world-renowned industry experts. You'll also have plenty of time to roam the Exhibit Hall, featuring more than 250 exhibitors with new products and innovative ideas.
In addition, the OVMA offers a variety of on-campus events — lunch and learn gatherings, coffee and donut meetings, and ice cream socials — that are free to students. We often bring freebies for students who attend these events that are always scheduled at a convenient time for you.
You'll also have complimentary access to OVMA-hosted one-day workshops covering a variety of topics ranging from scientific to professional.
Networking Opportunities
Having a strong social network is the key to survival for many species, including veterinary students. As an OVMA member, you'll have the chance to establish connections with peers and professionals, leading to rewarding relationships and career possibilities.
The OVMA encourages its student members not only to attend the Conference, but to get involved during the event as well. As a volunteer, you have the option to serve as session presiders for a variety of speakers, whom you will have an opportunity to meet and talk to — a great way to make connections with veterinary experts from across the country.
You'll also have a chance to network with OVMA members and other industry professionals at the annual Student Appreciation Reception, held in conjunction with the Conference. This event is always free for student members, so don't miss it!
You can also meet and work with OVMA members while making a difference within the community by joining an OVMA committee. Choose from a dozen different committees, each representing one facet of the OVMA philosophy: lifelong learning, stewardship, compassion and community. If you have a passion for improving relations among different age, gender, and ethnic groups in the veterinary community, join the Diversity Committee. Or, if your interest lies in educating the public on animal welfare issues, the Public Relations Committee is perfect for you.
Resources Beyond the Classroom
The OVMA has a variety of services available to you as a veterinary student. If you need help navigating your professional career, the OVMA can help you locate externships, mentorship possibilities, and scholarships. Many of these resources are available 24/7, right here on our Web site.
You'll also receive the OVMA's official bi-monthly newsletter, The Observer, delivered right to your mailbox. The magazine is chock full of news from Ohio and across the country, member features and updates, and classified listings.
