POSITION SUMMARY: The Veterinarian is responsible for overseeing medical and surgical care of animals at the shelter to maximize animal placement and minimize euthanasia of adoptable animals. Provides policy and decision-making leadership and technical expertise as it relates to veterinary medical care. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies.
- DVM/VMD degree from accredited university.
- Required licenses, including a Controlled Substance license from the DEA, and certifications and registrations must be maintained throughout employment.
- Experience in high quality high-volume surgical sterilization of dogs and cats, including pediatrics, preferred. Surgical sterilization experience of rabbits and experience in the care and treatment of livestock is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Provides lead direction to staff responsible for following prescribed treatment and maintenance of treatment records for animals.
- Must be able to perform medical examinations and procedures quickly and professionally, including surgeries, in a small, often hectic environment. Must be able to work for extended periods of time standing or sitting in a small space.
- Assure the highest quality medical care of animals in accordance with LHS policies and procedures.
- Responsible for medical examinations, medical care and monitoring of the health and welfare of animals in the care of LHS and privately owned animals participating in our community programs.
- Renders emergency treatment in life-threatening situations to sustain life.
- Provides expert witness testimony in court cases related to animal cruelty and neglect.
- Perform necropsy exams as well as provide comprehensive documentation, recommendations or interpretations regarding findings when requested.
- Evaluate, make recommendations for, and perform humane euthanasia of suffering unhealthy animals according to LHS policies and protocols.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records, files, reports, and other written material in a logical, concise, and accurate manner.
- This is a mentally demanding position, requiring the ability to quickly make sound medical decisions, often in isolation of other medical experts, both during and after normal working hours.
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and County laws, regulations, and ordinances governing:
- Rabies quarantine
- Euthanasia techniques
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) record keeping requirements for Schedule II narcotics and SHARPS biohazard waste.
- Physical and behavioral characteristics of common breeds of dogs, cats, and pocket pets
- Disease symptoms in domestic animals
- Autoclaving and surgical pack preparation
- Aseptic surgical techniques
- Professional animal care and husbandry
- LHS customer service objectives and strategies
- Current technology and trends in shelter medicine
- Properly store and maintain inventory of medical supplies, including Schedule II narcotics.
- Advise staff and volunteer in the proper care and medical treatment of animals within the society.
- Identify normal and abnormal animal behavior and symptoms of rabies and other animal disorders.
- Read, understand, interpret, and apply department and organizational policies and procedures.
- Provide prompt, efficient, and responsive service.
- Communicate effectively with a variety of individuals representing diverse cultures and backgrounds and function calmly in situations, which require a high degree of sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy.

- The ability to hold and participate in professional presentations, trainings, conversations, and meetings.
- Any other duties deemed necessary by the Shelter Manager and/or Executive Director.
SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: Position requires 32-40 hours per week. Flexibility is required, and the Veterinarian may need to work nights and weekends for events, trainings, shelter meetings, and other special circumstances as directed by the Shelter Manager and/or Executive Director.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Performs work in both a shelter and office like setting. Exposure to animals, animal waste, bites, scratches, fumes from cleaning/disinfectant solutions, airborne particles, zoonotic diseases, and moderate to high noise levels when in animal areas.
