Job Overview
The Shelter Veterinarian will perform all medical related duties for shelter housed animals and client animals within our care. He/She will support all other functions of the shelter through client and staff education, intake, adoption, diversion to intake programs and outreach.

Responsibilities and Duties.
• Perform spay and neuter surgeries for client owned dogs and cats and shelter cats through the KCHS Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic twice weekly (Mondays and Thursdays)
• Perform exams, administer vaccines and basic medications for client owned dogs and cats through the KCHS Low-Cost Wellness Clinic twice weekly (Tuesdays and Fridays)
• Maintain and monitor the health and wellness of shelter owned cats through vaccines, medications and basic diagnostics.
• Maintain the mental wellbeing of shelter owned cats through a comprehensive enrichment program in coordination with the Animal Caregivers to satisfy the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare for KCHS cats.
• Coordinate animal intake and surrender as well as intake diversion programs such as Return-to-Field
• Perform euthanasia for client owned animals and make euthanasia decisions for shelter owned animals.
• Maintain appropriate medical and drug records, including controlled substances, in order to maintain a valid VCPR and satisfy legal requirements.
• Interact with clients on a daily basis in a professional and caring manner.
• Other duties as needed to support the betterment of the shelter and animals in our care including taking pictures of cats, managing the website, statistics analysis, staff meetings, interview job applicants, etc.
• Coordinate activities with the Shelter Supervisor
• Reports to the KCHS Board of Directors
• Salary starting at $40/hour, depending on experience, for 36 hours per week.
Qualifications
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an AVMA-accredited program, preferably with emphasis on shelter medicine
• License from the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board
• Experience working with shelter animals desired but not required.
• Commitment to continual learning
• Excellent people skills, ability to work in a team setting; ability to communicate verbally and in writing to other staff and to the public.
