United Pet Group recalls aquarium heaters due to fire hazard

Cincinnati-based United Pet Group has issued a voluntary recall of approximately 1.2 million Marineland aquarium heaters because of fire and laceration hazards. The company reported that a wiring problem with its Marineland Stealth and Stealth Pro aquarium heaters can cause the heaters to overheat or break during normal use, damaging the aquarium and posing fire and laceration hazards. There have been 38 reports of fires causing property damage and 45 reports of broken aquarium glass. OneÊconsumer reportedÊan eye injury suffered when the heater forcefully broke while being handled. The heaters were sold for between $20 and $300 at pet stores nationwide and online from January 2004 through February 2011. Consumers should immediately stop using the heaters and contact United Pet Group 800-338-4896 or visit its Web site at www.marineland.comÊfor a free replacement heater or a full refund.
